Unbelievable

A story of tangled perfection.

A perfect basketball game is played during a devastating ice storm in Moscow, Idaho, and almost no one is there to witness it. One broadcaster risks his life to make it a world-wide spectacle.

Unbelievable is the story of a sports legend who hates the spotlight, an announcer who will do anything to be famous, and a town forever changed by their connection.

A blast of wind pushes Bob back. He lowers his head while squatting to keep from falling and gets turned around in the process. When the gust dies down and he straightens his legs, he isn’t sure where he is. He can’t see the Copperhead or the gym. Bob sets the case on his feet like an emperor penguin protecting its egg. He squints in all directions, trying to pick out anything that’s not hail. His knuckles are beet red as he clutches the case, upset all over again for not bringing gloves.

A flash of lightning helps him locate the gym. It’s still so far away and it’s getting harder to move or think. Bob’s shoulders ache. Even if he reaches the gym without dying from exposure or a fallen tree branch, he’ll still have to master his performance in wet clothes. Bob turns back to see that the Copperhead Inn is closer than the gym. He hasn’t yet reached the halfway point. He could turn around, sit by the fire in the lounge and forget Walchuck’s proposal.

Howard Cosell would never quit. Destiny doesn’t care if you’re cold and wet. Fame and fortune will warm his bones for years to come. Bob picks up the case and trudges another few feet through the slush as thunder crackles.

“And what is this? The hero keeps marching through the wind and ice,” Bob screeches into the storm. “Bob Bolt is defying the odds to make history, folks. We are witnessing history!”

His words give him strength and he leans into the next gust to proceed. The gym is closer. “A few more feet and our hero will be safe,” he declares. Lightning crashes and hail hits his teeth as he screams.

Reviews of Unbelievable

"It's absolutely crying out to be adapted into a screenplay. Part Slapshot, part Fargo, part Hoosiers. It's great." - Mike Kochczynski

"I could not put this down. As the intriguing plot unraveled, I realized this was a mystery story. I was drawn in and totally surprised at how everyone's problems were resolved. Animated dialogue, complicated and insightful characters, and descriptions creating tense situations make the Unbelievable believable." - Roderick English

"What a great read!! This was an enjoyable and satisfying read from beginning to end. It flows easily, develops its characters really well and, includes an unexpected twist that made nearly impossible to put down until I got to the end!
